RD National College, under the leadership of Dr Neha Jagtiani, the current Principal, organized a book launch on July 10, to introduce the latest book titled “Tryst with Koki” by former Principal, Dr Subhadra Anand. The event aimed to celebrate the publication and highlight the Sindhi culture and community.
“Tryst with Koki” is a work of fiction based on factual information derived from the author’s well-researched book, “National Integration of Sindhis.” The story revolves around the Advani family, whose lives in Karachi are drastically altered due to the Partition of India. They go from residing in the upscale Clifton locality to living in the impoverished Ulhasnagar Camp. The narrative primarily follows the experiences of 18-year-old Sheila Advani, who faces unimaginable challenges. The story also sheds light on other family members, one of whom takes on a menial job while another becomes a lawyer. Despite their struggles, the family perseveres through hard work and resilience. The book aims to resonate with Sindhis who had to leave their homeland and establish new lives around the world, showcasing the indomitable spirit of the Sindhi community.
The book draws a symbolic connection between Sheila’s survival and forbearance and the stash of Kokis she carries with her—a Sindhi flatbread made with ghee, chillies, onions, and coriander. Koki represents the powerhouse of energy that Sheila embodies. The story narrates her journey, filled with extreme emotions, successes, and losses—a true tryst with Koki.
RD National College, established in 1949 with the blessings of Rishi Dayaram Gidumal and Dr Annie Besant, is the first college founded under the HSNC Board. While it holds Sindhi minority status, the college is open to students from all backgrounds, symbolizing a national spirit.
The book launch event at RD National College was graced by prominent personalities. Suniel Shetty, a well-known actor, attended as the Chief Guest, while Vikramaditya Motwane, a respected figure, served as the Guest of Honour. Manish Anand and Sumukhi Suresh conducted readings from the book, followed by a conversation between the author, Dr Subhadra Anand, and poet Menka Shivdasani. The event successfully showcased the Sindhi ethos intricately woven into the book and celebrated the rich culture and heritage of the community.
