Pali Hill Park named after Santoor Maestro late Pandit Shivkumar Sharma

A public park in Bandra named after legendary santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma was dedicated to people on the occasion of his birth anniversary on January 13. Located at Pali Mala Garden and ground, near Saint Anne’s High School, Bandra West, this park (Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Udyan) is now open to the public and has been beautifully renovated with various amenities, providing a serene environment for everyone to enjoy.

During the inauguration, we had the privilege of having the presence of renowned flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, noted writer Javed Akhtar, MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar, and family members like Rahul Sharma’s wife Barkha Sharma & son Abhinav Sharma and elder brother Rohit Sharma. It was a heartfelt tribute to the maestro who touched the hearts of millions with his music.

“The park has been named after my father and world-renowned classical music/composer Pandit Shivkumar Sharma with the support from MLA Adv. Ashish Shelarji and local corporator Swapna Mhatre. We are grateful to them,” said Santoor maestro & son Rahul Sharma. Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Udyan is launched on the occasion of my father Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shivkumar Sharma’s birth anniversary,” said santoor maestro & son Rahul Sharma.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was a celebrated & legendary classical maestro/composer who was credited with adapting the santoor for Indian classical music. Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was successful in giving the santoor the position of a popular classical instrument. He modified the folk instrument in order to make it more suitable for classical music.

For his remarkable achievements in the field of music, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was honoured with many prestigious awards, including the Padmashree, the Padma Vibhushan, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, an honorary doctorate from the University of Jammu, the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, etc. He was also honoured with an honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore.
