The Trustees of St. Catherine of Sienna School & Orphanage led their 16th Eco-Warrior beach cleanup drive at the Bandstand promenade on 17th January. While many students were busy with exams, the Rainbow Kids of St. Catherine (day scholars from economically challenged families), along with their parents and the Bandra Bandstand Resident Trust, stepped up as eco-warriors.

During the beach cleanup drive, young volunteers, guided by their teachers, worked tirelessly to remove litter from rocks. This effort highlights a growing issue: many public spaces are treated with disregard. Litter, especially plastics, not only harms our environment but also affects marine life. It’s crucial to educate ourselves and others about proper waste disposal and the consequences of our actions. Countries like Singapore have implemented strict anti-littering laws that promote cleanliness and responsibility. There was a time some years ago when the municipal authorities fined vendors for providing plastic bags to their customers. Perhaps we need these rules re-introduced as our self-absorbed citizens just don’t seem to realise the long-term consequences of the indiscriminate use of plastics.
