Located on Turner Road, Bandra, the art installation series features eight ring sculptures, each representing a different element where a cyclical pattern is observed. The rings being circular in shape symbolise the cyclical nature of things in different aspects of our life. Artist Sangeeta Babani tells us, “As we look around, we find this cyclical nature in various elements – the rise and fall of the sea levels seen as tides, a fruit gives you a seed, which then grows into a plant and then into a tree that then bears fruits, the sun rising every day in the east and setting in the west. Despite their great size and age, their lives pan out in much the same way that a living creature’s does: They have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and as such, the life of a mountain mimics our own.”

Sangeeta grew up in the south-east coast of Spain where she completed her formative and higher education. She has meticulously meshed both cultures of India and Spain in her paintings. We asked what inspired this series, and she tell us, “Public art has an incredible way of resonating with communities and enthralling resident’s attention. Oftentimes, public art installations incorporate elements that relate to the city’s surroundings. Art in public is a sign of equality in the society – art is for all – from laymen to industrialists. That’s an inspiration for me as the common man can view and appreciate this art.”

The sculptures being situated at one of the busiest junctions in Bandra are frequented by daily travellers who might be passing by in a bus or their car or riding on a bike. When asked what her hope for visitors is to experience as they see her art, Sangeeta says, “I hope what they see and experience on their daily journey to their destination is the same way their life follows a routine – where they might be passing this spot every day and at the same time, that things in nature too follow this same cycle and routine. That human life just like the elements of nature is cyclical and rhythmic without us even focusing much on it. We follow the same routine every day without much thought, just like the rising and falling of the tides.”
