R.D. & S.H. National College and S.W.A. Science College launched their organic garden and released a booklet on ‘Environment Sustainability Initiatives’ by R. D. National College on 17th October 2022. The launch was graced by the august presence of Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways as the Chief Guest. Also gracing the occasion with their august presence were the Guests of Honour Shri Kripashankar Singh, Former Minister of State for Home Affairs, and Adv Ashish Shelar, MLA.
The organic garden initiative has been spearheaded by the Principal of the College, Dr Neha Jagtiani, and her team of professors including Dr Mona Kejriwal, Prof. Manoj Kadam, and Prof. Nikhil Dissoria. “We have two different types of biodegradable waste on campus; while there is green garbage, there is also left-over food from the canteen. We have created tumblers that are used for composting left-over cooked food. Whereas for uncooked and green garbage from kitchen and garden, vermicompost procedure is applied,” said Mona Kejariwal, associate professor, Department of Botany at R.D. National College.
Dr Neha Jagtiani, the Principal, said, “Our green initiative endeavours sustainability of the five elements of nature are the development of the Dhanwantari Medicinal Plant Garden on campus in collaboration with Sushila Hospitals and Research Centre, Nashik, starting the first Institution Innovation Cell in Mumbai and being honoured with a 5-star rating from amongst 1700 IICs all over the country, going on to become the IIC mentor institute, solid waste management through composting, in-house water recycling plant, installed by Phytorid Technology patented by NEERI, effective e-waste management plant and several others.”
