After a hiatus of two and a half years, the Symphony Orchestra of India Season had a spectacular start as artists came together to do what they love. Audiences were treated to performances by conductor Alpesh Chauhan, pianists Benjamin Grosvenor and Richard Uttley, horn player Ben Goldscheider, and the trio of Sayaka Shoji, Henri Demarquette and Jean-Frédéric Neuburger.
Now the SOI is gearing up for the closing concert of the season featuring conductor Richard Farnes and pianist Pavel Kolesnikov. Kolesnikov’s Siberian heritage and European experiences make him a unique musician. His imaginative & thought-provoking programming offers listeners a fresh, often unexpected perspective on familiar pieces. He will perform Rachmaninoff‘s mesmerizing Piano Concerto No. 3 which has the reputation of being one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical piano repertoire. The programme also features Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, which people may recognize from the various movies & shows it has been featured in. Music from this symphony famously accompanied the climactic final speech scene in ‘The King’s Speech’.
The end of the orchestral concerts doesn’t mark the end of the Season. October brings with it the return of a fully-staged opera to the NCPA. A colossal collaboration with the Hungarian State Opera, Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus will have three shows between the 12th – 16th of October at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre. Featuring a massive set and over a hundred performers, this light & funny opera is full of surprises, humour and delightful music. It will be a great foray into opera for new audiences.
Don’t miss the rest of the SOI Season, only at the NCPA!
